IRS announces tax relief for Tennessee storm and tornado victims

Affected individuals have until June 17, 2024, to file their 2023 tax returns and make 2023 IRA and HSA contributions.

The IRS issued IR-2023-250, which provides tax relief for certain qualifying Tennessee taxpayers impacted by storms and tornadoes; various deadlines are postponed to June 17. The IRS provided tax relief for individuals in parts of Tennessee affected by severe storms and tornadoes that began on Dec. 9, 2023. Affected individuals have until June 17, 2024, to file returns, make IRA & HSA contributions for 2023, and pay any taxes that were originally due during this period.

A contribution made between January 1 and June 17 of the current year must be irrevocably designated by the account owner as a contribution for the prior year.

The IRS is offering relief to any area designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Currently, this includes Davidson, Dickson, Montgomery, and Sumner counties. Individuals that reside in these counties qualify for tax relief and it is the owner's responsibility to determine if they are eligible. The same relief will be available to any other Tennessee localities added later to the disaster area.
