IRS announces tax relief for Rhode Island storm, flooding, or tornado victims

Affected individuals have until June 17, 2024, or July 15, 2024, to file their 2023 tax returns and make 2023 IRA and HSA contributions.

Rhode Island taxpayers impacted by severe storms, flooding, or tornadoes qualify for tax relief; various deadlines are postponed to June 17 or July 15.

The IRS issued IR-2024-27, which provides tax relief for certain qualifying individuals and businesses in parts of Rhode Island affected by severe storms, flooding, and tornadoes that began on September 10, 2023. Affected individuals have until June 17, 2024, to file returns, make IRA & HSA contributions for 2023, and pay any taxes that were originally due during this period.

A contribution made between January 1 and June 17 of the current year must be irrevocably designated by the account owner as a contribution for the prior year.

The IRS is offering this relief to any area designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Currently, this includes Providence County, and it is the owner's responsibility to determine if they are eligible. The same relief will be available to any other Rhode Island localities added later to the disaster area.

The IRS also issued IR-2024-94, which provides tax relief for certain qualifying individuals and businesses in Rhode Island that were affected by severe storms and flooding that began on December 17, 2023.  Affected individuals have until July 15, 2024, to file returns, make IRA & HSA contributions for 2023, and pay any taxes that were originally due during this period.

A contribution made between January 1 and July 15 of the current year must be irrevocably designated by the account owner as a contribution for the prior year.

The IRS is offering this relief to any area designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Individuals and households that reside or have a business in Kent, Providence, and Washington counties qualify for tax relief, and it is the owner's responsibility to determine if they are eligible.
