IRS announces tax relief for Alaska storm, landslide, and mudslide victims

Affected individuals have until July 15, 2024, to file their 2023 tax returns and make 2023 IRA and HSA contributions.

The IRS issued IR-2024-81, which provided tax relief for certain qualifying Alaska taxpayers impacted by severe storms, landslides, and mudslides; various deadlines are postponed to July 15.  The IRS announced tax relief for individuals and businesses in the Wrangell Cooperative Association of Alaska Tribal Nation that were affected by severe storms, landslides and mudslides that began on Nov. 20, 2023.  Affected individuals have until July 15, 2024, to file returns, make IRA & HSA contributions for 2023, and pay any taxes that were originally due during this period.

A contribution made between January 1 and July 15 of the current year must be irrevocably designated by the account owner as a contribution for the prior year.

The IRS is offering relief to any area designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Currently, this includes the Wrangell Cooperative Association of Alaska Tribal Nation. It is the owner's responsibility to determine if they are eligible. The same relief will be available to any other Alaska localities added later to the disaster area.
